Abstract
Although a two-component model system (i.e. epithelial and stromal spi ndle-shaped cells) may explain the regulation of aromatase activity an d the location of possible intratumoural sources of oestrogen producti on in mammary neoplasms, a third component, consisting of lymphocytes and macrophages, may also be considered. Examples are presented, sugge sting the importance of a three-component model for a more complete un derstanding of the regulation of oestrogen production in breast-tumour tissue.
