It was established, by electron probe microanalysis and petrographic e
xamination, that phosphorus is present in rough pyrochlore concentrate
s in the form of apatite represented by individual grains and intergro
wths in niobium-containing minerals pyrochlore and columbite. Thin dis
seminations of apatite in ferruginous niobium minerals is the main cau
se of incomplete magnetic separation of niobium concentrates, even in
high magnetic fields.
