Pr. Delucia, EFFECTS OF PICTORIAL RELATIVE SIZE AND GROUND-INTERCEPT INFORMATION ON JUDGMENTS ABOUT POTENTIAL COLLISIONS IN PERSPECTIVE DISPLAYS, Human factors, 37(3), 1995, pp. 528-538
Using perspective displays, observers judged whether two objects that
approached each other in midair would collide. When objects were diffe
rent sizes, observers often did not detect imminent collisions. Errors
decreased with equal-sized objects or ground-intercept information. R
esults from these limited conditions suggest that judgments about coll
ision in perspective displays (e.g., three-dimensional displays of air
craft) can be enhanced by minimizing ambiguities created by pictorial
relative size cues. Results are consistent with studies of judgments a
bout object-self collisions.
