Abstract
The manifest importance of reducing the incidence of low birth weight is most obvious for the first year of life: low birth weight is the si ngle most important factor affecting infant morbidity and mortality(1) . However, there is growing evidence that the adverse consquences of l ow birth weight continue throughout the life cycle. This review deals primarily with social causes of low birth weight.
