Abstract
Communication: Protein engineering provides a rationale for obtaining self-assembling molecules which yield supramolecular arrays with varyi ng quaternary architectures. An example is E. coli glutamine synthetas e which can be manipulated to yield molecular tubes (see figure), cabl es, and hexagonally packed sheets.
