Abstract
The characterization of four cyano-containing gas chromatography stati onary phases using a linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) of th e type log K = c + r(1)R(2) + s(1) pi(2)(. H) + a(1) Sigma alpha(2)(H) + b(1) Sigma beta(2)(H) + l(1) log L(16) was performed, and the resul ts compared with LSER coefficients for other, previously studied phase s. The coefficients obtained indicate that the presence of CN groups i n these phases contributes significantly to the dipolarity-polarizabil ity and H-bond acceptor (s and a values in the above LSER, respectivel y), but that these phases have very low or statistically insignificant r values and b values. The results are evaluated in terms of the deve lopment of quantitative structure solubility relationships to predict LSER coefficients.
