This paper discusses the implementation of a control strategy on a mul
tistage countercurrent brownstock washing system. The approach taken i
ncludes three parts: dynamic simulation of the system, design of a con
trol strategy, and the implementation at the pulp mill. Each of these
parts is covered in details from an industrial point of view and with
special attention given to fundamental control issues such as anti-win
dup and bumpless transfer arrangements. These issues were found to be
essential for the successful operation of the system.
