Using quantum kinetic equations with memory we calculate the time-depe
ndent distribution function of an electron gas injected suddenly in th
e conduction band of a wide-band-gap insulator. A comparison is made w
ith the semiclassical Boltzmann equation approach. We show that due to
the large electron-phonon coupling occurring in such materials a quan
tum approach is needed.
