Progress in the methods of zeta potential and wetting measurements are
reported taking as an example the characterization oi hemodialysis me
mbranes. The investigations were carried out on flat membranes or rege
nerated cellulose, amine-modified cellulose and cellulose acetate. The
electrokinetic analyzer has been shown to be suited to characterize s
uch film materials. The results demonstrate the basic character of ami
ne-modified membranes and the acid properties of regenerated cellulose
and cellulose acetate. Wetting experiments have been carried out by a
drop profile analysis in presence of water using completely swollen m
embranes. The determination of advancing and receding contact angles h
as revealed dissimilar degrees of hydrophilicity and varying hysteresi
s phenomena for the different types of cellulose.
