Mp. Ginebra et al., PREPARATION AND PROPERTIES OF SOME MAGNESIUM CONTAINING CALCIUM-PHOSPHATE CEMENTS, Journal of materials science. Materials in medicine, 5(2), 1994, pp. 103-107
Attempts were made to prepare magnesium-containing calcium phosphate c
ements. These were successful at the composition CaMg2(PO4)2xH2O. X-ra
y diffraction showed that such a compound is not formed but that the c
ement consists of magnesium phosphate precipitated on the calcium phos
phate admixture. The pH of this formulation is around 10 during settin
g and after. The cement is injectable. Its setting time is about 10 mi
n. In this study compressive strength values were as high as 11 M Pa a
nd the diametral tensile strength was over 2 M Pa. Animal experiments
must show whether it is suitable for replacement or augmentation of bo
ne in non-load bearing situations.
