Abstract
Semi-crystalline poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) wire was implanted intramed ullary in rat tibiae to evaluate the fracture healing processes and th e tissue reaction or: the PLLA in a fractured bone. The fracture heali ng after PLLA implantation was compared to a sham-operated group of an imals. In all animals with intramedullary PLLA wire implantation newly formed bone was seen immediately against the implant 2 and 6 months a fter implantation. None of the sham-operated animals showed newly form ed intramedullary bone formation other than fracture heating callus an d normal trabecular bone.
