Abstract
The Paper makes a clear distinction between the two driving methods us ed in the tunnelling process: the open mode and the closed mode, the f irst being theoretically faster but slowed in practice by the spoil ha ndling and disposal capacity. The tunnelling machines, of complex desi gn, mobilized a large amount of computer-controlled and automatic equi pment, also described in this Paper.
