Abstract
The main purpose of this paper is to describe several techniques for c haracterizing the functional coupling of a population of in vitro cult ured neurons to a planar array of microtransducers. Both experimental aspects and computer simulations are considered. Experimental data inc lude a comparison of neuron growth on various substrata and multichann el extracellular monitoring of neuron activity. Simulations dealing wi th impedance measurements and extracellular stimulation are also descr ibed.
