One of the largest flue gas desulphurization (FGD) systems in the worl
d is currently being installed at Drax power station in the UK (Table
1). Work started on site in 1988 with staged completion planned betwee
n 1993 and 1996. The project has introduced pioneering technology to t
he UK to ensure that emissions of sulphur dioxide are reduced. This Pa
per describes the FGD process being installed at Drax and explains som
e of the design considerations and the logistics of retrofitting such
a system to an operating station.
