The reaction between aluminum chloride and octyldimethylmethoxysilane
was investigated at room temperature using NMR and IR spectroscopy com
bined with molecular weight determination from freezing point reductio
n in benzene. The structure as deduced from the experimental results w
as found to be a dimer containing two silicon atoms and two aluminum a
toms of which the latter were tetrahedrally coordinated.
