The time evolution of internal friction and shape change in different
microstructural states of two Cu-Zn-Al shape memory alloys has been in
vestigated. In the single-martensite phase state, the monotonic decrea
se of internal friction with time is attributed to the pinning of mart
ensite/martensite interfaces. When the parent phase is present, the ch
ange in the internal friction is associated with the formation of stre
ss-induced martensite and the subsequent pinning of the martensite/par
ent and martensite/martensite interfaces.
