The effect of dichotomizing a continuous phenotype in linkage analysis
of a simulated oligogenic trait is explored. We conclude that dichoto
mization does not in itself preclude the detection of loci which accou
nt for as little as 16% of the genetic variance of the disease. The ef
fects of inclusion of known covariates and quantitative trait linkage
analysis are also discussed. (C) 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
