Abstract
The distinctive Mossbauer spectra of goethite cannot be explained on t he basis of superparamagnetism. Consideration of superparamagnetic flu ctuations in only the transverse components of the sublattice magnetiz ation ('mode superparamagnetism', proposed by Coey et al), or of possi ble interactions between superparamagnetic particles, does not alter t his conclusion.
