Forest resource managers throughout the nation are being challenged to
ensure the long-term sustainability of forest ecosystems. Such effort
s often focus on how harvesting activities can be accomplished in a mo
re ecologically sensitive manner, while accommodating increased public
interest in the breadth of values associated with forests. During the
past six years, objectives of this nature have required the cooperati
ve attention of Minnesota's forestry community. A state with a history
of progressive forest policies and a sensitivity to the importance of
blending environmental, community, and economic development goals, Mi
nnesota has developed a plan to ensure the sustainability of its fores
ts for those citizens who depend on them.
