Abstract
The chain length distribution of sulphonated surfactants was determine d by high resolution capillary gas chromatography. Prior to analysis t he sulphonate functionality was converted into the methyl ester deriva tive. Two methods of derivatisation were investigated and compared. Th e procedure was used for the major types of anionic surfactants includ ing alkane sulphonate, alkylbenzene sulphonate and alpha-olefin sulpho nate.
