Abstract
This paper describes the progress made by the Department of Water Affa irs and Forestry in the development of documented water quality guidel ines for aquatic ecosystems in South Africa, which will be able to tak e into account local and site-specific conditions. Proposed guidelines for toxic substances, nutrients and physicochemical variables are des cribed.
