The seismic swarm which occurred in 1983 at the northern tip of the Gu
lf of Aqaba was relocated using the data published by national and int
ernational agencies. The epicentres are distributed along the eastern
shore of the gulf in the prolongation of the Jordan-Dead Sea transform
fault. The focal mechanism of the main shocks exhibits left-lateral s
trike-slip faulting, indicating that a segment of the major transcurre
nt fault was activated.
