Mr. Fernando, THE TRUMPET SHALL SOUND FOR RICH PEASANTS - MUKMIN,KASAN UPRISING IN GEDANGAN, EAST JAVA, 1904, Journal of Southeast Asian studies, 26(2), 1995, pp. 242
Small-scale conflicts between peasants and the forces of colonial gove
rnment in Java after 1870 are seen by some scholars as a precursor of
the modern political struggle for freedom. Focusing on an incident in
East Java in 1904, this paper argues that such a view is often mislead
ing, and that a very different scenario emerges when the economic and
social forces that lead to small uprisings are closely examined.
