The flow birefringence of cyanoethyl hydroxypropyl cellulose (CEHPC) a
nd cyanoethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (CEHEC) was studied in a number o
f solvents with differing indexes of refraction. Dependence of the opt
ical shear coefficient of CEHPC in ethylacetate on the molecular mass
of polymer was determined in the range from 28 x 10(3) to 580 x 10(3).
The role of the micro- and macroform effects is discussed. The high i
ntrinsic optical anisotropy (11 x 10(-25) cm(3)) of the chain unit of
a CEHPC molecule is attributed to some structural features and anisotr
opy of the substituent groups.
