INCLUSIVE AND EXCLUSIVE PRODUCTION OF ETA MESONS BY PIONS

Inclusive and exclusive (pi, eta) reactions are studied in the framewo rk of a momentum space DWIA model. It is assumed that both reactions a re dominated by formation of an N(1535) resonance. Medium corrections for the self-energy of the intermediate N are taken into account. Cro ss sections are calculated for (pi+, eta) inclusive reactions on C-12 and compared with experiment And with existing theoretical calculation s. We show that quantitative agreement is obtained with experimental d ata, assuming this reaction is dominated by quasifree single-nucleon k nockout, and using an N free width of 150 MeV. Differential and total cross sections are calculated for the exclusive reaction C-13(pi+, et a)N-13.
