Mv. Rapallino et al., SCREENING OF THE MACROMOLECULAR COMPONENT OF CSF FROM VARIOUS PATHOLOGIES FOR ITS INTERFERENCE WITH GABA(A) RECEPTOR FUNCTION, Italian journal of neurological sciences, 16(9), 1995, pp. 643-646
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients undergoing lumbar punc
ture for suspected neurological diseases were fractioned into macromol
ecular (MW >3000 Daltons) and small molecule components (MW <3000 Dalt
ons). The macromolecular component was tested for its interference wit
h GABA stimulation of Cl-36(-) accumulation in rat cerebral cortex mic
rosacs. For many pathologies, no interference was apparent; an excepti
on was two patients with Parkinson's disease in whom there were clear
signs of stimulated GABA activity, This last result seems worthy of fu
rther investigation.
