The modern blast furnace has reached a high degree of perfection : rem arkable achievements for hot metal quality, energetic efficiency and r eliability for operation campaigns reaching almost 15 years. The major challenge, at present, is to increase significantly the tuyere inject ion rate, in particular of coal. This objective is essential for the r eduction of coke consumption, which will help to keep the coke plants longer in operation and contribute to the economical efficiency and th e continuity of the hot metal route.
