We present analytic procedures for calculating the magnetostatic and r
esponse functions of magnetoresistive (MR) recording heads. To apply t
hese methods we make several simplifying approximations, which have be
en found to be valid for typical recording head geometries. In particu
lar, we show how to calculate the bias magnetization distribution, ide
al transition pulse shape, and frequency response for the unshielded M
R (UMR) head. To do this, we summarize a method based on conformal map
ping and reciprocity, and present a simpler direct method which produc
es identical results. We extend this alternate method to find analytic
expressions for the saturated bias magnetization.
