Fwc. Neser et al., ESTIMATED GENETIC TRENDS FOR WEANING WEIGHT IN 3 DORPER LINES WITH DIFFERENT SELECTION CRITERIA, South African journal of animal science, 25(3), 1995, pp. 65-69
A study was undertaken to compare the effectiveness of three different
selection strategies in increasing weaning weight of a Dorper flock u
nder natural conditions. Data were analysed by mixed model procedures.
Direct selection for weaning weight under natural conditions proved t
o be effective. Selection on breed standards and selection on weaning
weight under natural conditions combined with feedlot performance were
not successful in increasing weaning weight. Only direct selection fo
r weaning weight under natural conditions is therefore recommended.
