M. Bergovec et al., CORRELATION OF SOME ANTHROPOMETRIC OBESITY INDICATORS AND CORONARY HEART-DISEASE IN OLD-AGE POPULATION, Collegium antropologicum, 19(2), 1995, pp. 441-451
The aim of this study was to clarify, correlation of obesity and coron
ary heart disease (CHD) in old age by anthropometric measurements. The
study was conducted in 210 subjects (78 men and 132 women) older than
60 years. The following anthropometric parameters, obesity indicators
, were examined: weight, height, body mass index, thorax circumference
, abdominal circumference and upper arm circumference. Upper arm skinf
old and subscapular skinfold were also measured. Coronary heart diseas
e was defined as a state after myocardial infarction, presence of sign
ificant Q-wave in electrocardiogram and/or history of angina pectoris.
Results of the anthropometric measurements were compared with the fre
quency of coronary heart disease. Data were statistically analyzed by
boxplot method and statistical significance was expressed by Median te
st (p=0.005). The results show that there is no statistically signific
ant correlation between the increased weight and coronary heart diseas
e as to anthropometric measurement in the examinees. This study speaks
in favour of studies proving that excessed weight in old age has less
influence on the development of coronary heart disease than this is a
case in younger population.
