Nuclear matrix elements for the two-neutrino double beta decay (2 nu b
eta beta) ground-state transitions of Ge-76 and Te-130 are analyzed in
relation with spin-flip and non-spin-flip degrees of freedom. The cal
culations have been performed using realistic interactions in the fram
ework of the quasiparticle random-phase approximation. Present results
confirm the findings of schematic models concerning the competition b
etween these degrees of freedom.
