The presented case reports a rare complication of paclitaxel misuse: r
ecall soft tissue injury at the site of previous subcutaneous paclitax
el administration. Generally, paclitaxel extravasation causes only mil
d dermatologic toxicity and ulcerations are rare. We describe the thir
d case of a so-called recall dermatitis following paclitaxel chemother
apy. In contrast to the previously reported cases, soft tissue damage
arose at the abdominal wall at the injection sires of previously admin
istered subcutaneous paclitaxel in homeopathic doses of 0.1 mg, The re
call reaction continued to exacerbate after each course of systemic pa
clitaxel chemotherapy and finally led to surgical treatment. The cours
e of the observed skin toxicity makes it probable that the pathomechan
isms involved in these recall reactions are different from those respo
nsible for the limited skin toxicity observed after paclitaxel extrava
sation. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
