New York University's campaign of archaeological research at Aphrodisi
as in 1994 included site recording, limited excavation, and sculpture
documentation and conservation. Among the main focuses of attention we
re the Bouleuterion and Sculptor's Workshop, the four-column monument
at the Southwest Complex, the Stadium, the inscribed statue bases of t
he site, and the conservation and display of the Zoilos frieze. Highli
ghts included the location of an important new city street, the discov
ery of a marble panel inscribed with four letters from the emperor Had
rian, and the completion of a large depot-workshop for the conservatio
n and storage of marble sculpture.
