The effect of atomic hydrogen during the growth of undoped and nitroge
n-doped CdTe by photon-assisted molecular beam epitaxy was investigate
d. Hydrogen incorporation is enhanced by the presence of nitrogen. Inf
rared absorption measurements strongly suggest the formation of N-H co
mplexes. Hall measurements indicate that the complexes are donorlike i
n nature. Hydrogenation radically changes the low temperature photolum
inescence in both undoped and nitrogen-doped layers. Exciton-related l
uminescence is quenched at low temperature. Nitrogen-related donor-acc
eptor pair luminescence is also absent from N-doped hydrogenated layer
s, consistent with complex formation. Copper donor-acceptor pair lumin
escence appears to be enhanced by hydrogen. (C) 1996 American Institut
