Possible metal sources for the formation of massive sulfide base metal
deposits located in sedimentary-volcanogenic associations are discuss
ed. In Rudnyi Altai, metals could be extracted from minerals of host r
ocks during their metamorphism (regional propylitization). The propyli
tization could be related to the ancient marine water that drains off
Na and Mg but absorbs K, Ca, and other elements, including metals remo
ved from ore-bearing rocks. Calculations suggest that the amount of le
ached metals is quite sufficient for the formation of deposits.
