S. Blain et al., SKIN REACTIONS FOLLOWING NORPLANT(R) INSERTION AND REMOVAL-POSSIBLE CAUSATIVE FACTORS, British journal of family planning, 21(4), 1996, pp. 130-132
A study was undertaken to investigate the cause of skin reactions asso
ciated with Steristrip(R) dressings in women who had undergone inserti
on or removal of Norplant(R) contraceptive implants. Factors examined
included previous history of allergies, tension in the strip, use of l
atex gloves when applying the Steristrips and any previous history of
allergies. It was found that use of latex containing gloves was a sign
ificant factor in the occurrence of these reactions. Difference in the
incidence of reactions between Norplant insertion and removal did not
reach significance. However, the distribution of the grade of severit
y of the reactions suggested greater problems following Norplant remov
al rather than insertion. Significantly more reactions occurred under
the Steristrip which was applies first than the one applied second ind
icating that tension may also be a factor. Previous history of allergi
es amongst users was not found to be a significant factor.
