Abstract
George Gamow (1904-1968) was a man with boundless interests and imagin ation that took him from relativity theory to quantum mechanics and nu clear physics, back to cosmology and then to genetics. He had made sem inal contributions to these key areas of modern knowledge which ensure d him an enduring place among the giants of twentieth-century science.
