Solid state gas sensor devices exhibit a high sensitivity in the ppm r
ange and can be applied for the detection of noxious or explosive gase
s and vapours in air. Detection principles are outlined and examples f
or a spectroscopical characterization of gas-surface interactions are
given. An improved specificity is attained by the use of sensor arrays
and a computational evaluation, e.g. by a neural network. Recent real
izations of such multisensor arrangements are discussed.
