Abstract
Scrambling the state-of-polarisation of the optical carrier at the bit rate of the transmitted signal can greatly improve the transmission p erformance of long-haul optical amplified transmission systems. By sup erimposing optical phase modulation onto the synchronous polarisation scrambling we can improve the performance of both single channel and W DM transmission systems even further. The authors successfully applied this technique of synchronous polarisation/phase modulation to transm it 100Gbit/s (20 5Gbit/s WDM channels) over 6300 km.
