Abstract
The paper outlines the first stages of development in the U.S.A. and U .S.S.R. of superconducting magnetic energy storage systems (SMES) inte nded for improving the dynamic stability of electrical power systems a nd reliability of power consumption. The energy performance of power t hyristor converters, one of the main components of such SMES, is consi dered. The construction of a converter designed for an experimental SM ES plant at the Institute of High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1989-1992 is described. Versions of converter circuits with GTO for SMES are briefly considered.
