The infrared reflection spectra of sillenite type crystals of Bi12MO20
(M: Si, Ge, Ti, Fe) are measured in the whole range of the first-orde
r phonon frequencies and analyzed using the Kramers-Kronig relations.
Two-mode behavior is determined for several characteristic modes of Bi
12Si1-xTixO20 and Bi12Ge1-xTixO20 solid solutions. The experimental da
ta are discussed in the model of vibrating structural units. The vibra
tion frequencies and the force constants for tetrahedra MO, are calcul
ated. The calculation results are in good agreement with experimental
data for the modes with two-mode behavior.
