Arylacetic acids and alpha-bromoalkyl ketone have been oxidized into c
arbonyl compounds and acids in high yields, respectively with sodium m
etaperiodate in refluxing ethanol in the presence of benzyltriethylamm
onium chloride and dibenzo-(18)-crown-6. Conducting the reaction witho
ut either phase transfer catalyst (PTC) or dibenzo-(18)-crown-6 (DB-18
-C-6) results in lower yields than with both catalysts. It has been de
monstrated that the spatial co-ordination of ion and ligand cavity pla
ys important role in using crown ethers.
