N-Acylphytosphingosine (Ceramide, 1) and the dipeptide asperglaucide (
2) have been isolated from the whole plant of Silybium marianum, besid
es psi-taraxasteryl acetate, a mixture of phytosterols (beta-sitostero
l, campesterol. stigmasterol) and sterol glucosides. The fatty acid pa
rt of the ceramide consists principally of alpha-hydroxy acids(26:0, 1
1.8; 25:0, 16.6; 24:0, 27.7; 23:0, 3.8; 16:0, 5.6; and 24:1.9Z, 2.9%)
in addition to small amounts of stearic (18:0, 4.3) and palmitic(16:0,
5.4%) acids.
