A. Vonkienlin et al., HIGH-RESOLUTION DETECTION OF ENERGETIC HEAVY-IONS WITH A CALORIMETRICLOW-TEMPERATURE DETECTOR, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section A, Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment, 368(3), 1996, pp. 815-818
A low temperature calorimeter with good energy resolution was develope
d for detection of energetic heavy ions. It consists of a doped german
ium crystal as thermometer and a sapphire crystal as absorber, and is
operated in a He-4 window cryostat at temperatures ranging from 1.3 to
2.0 K. For 2.38 GeV Bi-209 ions a relative energy resolution of Delta
E/E = 1.8 x 10(-3) was observed, most probably still limited by the e
nergy spread of the incident ion beam.
