A system is proposed whereby at the switching nodes in an ATM network,
the probability of cell loss due to buffer queue overflow is not cons
tant for each virtual channel but can be controlled in accordance with
the rate of cell generation. There is evidence to show that for video
services, such a system would improve the quality of service for the
majority of users. The system has the advantage that the control would
be applied at intermediate nodes in the network without the necessity
for additional signalling between nodes.
