Abstract
A synthetic pathway is described which leads to the formation of pyrro le with a pendant aromatic groups in the beta-position. Such materials are found to exhibit a monotropic liquid crystal phase. Beta-substitu ted pyrroles of this type may be polymerised chemically to form poly(b eta-substituted pyrroles).
