Pithecellobium saman and Pithecellobium mangense exudate a yellow clea
r gum. The gums are both dextrorotatory. The acidity of these gums is
very similar. Galactose and arabinose are the major neutral sugar cons
tituents. The high content of rhamnose in P. saman gum contrasts with
the absence of this methyl pentose in P. mangense gum. C-13-NMR spectr
a of the gums studied showed interesting structural features of these
complex polymers.
