T beta gamma was shown to stimulate the hydrolysis and synthesis of Pt
dInsP(2) in dark-adapted bovine retinal rod outer segments. In contras
t, T alpha(GDP) blocked the effect of beta gamma-transducin. It was al
so demonstrated that T beta gamma was a stimulator of P-32 incorporati
on into PtdInsP(2) in ROS. These findings explain the modulating actio
ns of GTP and light on PtdInsP(2) hydrolysis and synthesis in ROS. The
possible existence of cross-talk between the cGMP and phosphoinositid
e cascades in retinal rods was discussed.
