The prospects for widespread end commercial success of CdTe-based phot
ovoltaics are discussed and the key technical issues to be resolved ar
e identified. Device efficiencies achieved using thin CdS on small-are
a cells must be adapted to manufacturing, potential consumers must be
convinced of module stability and environmental concerns must be dealt
with effectively. All these issues ave being actively addressed and t
here do not appear to be any insurmountable obstacles to the commercia
lization of CdTe photovoltaic technology.
