The principal result of the paper is a novel control scheme for the vo
ltage sourced reversible rectifier based on variable structure control
(VSC) techniques. A time-scale separation property of the rectifier d
ynamics is identified. This is exploited by using singular perturbatio
n methods to reduce the model order. Conditions are given for global s
tability. Simulation results are presented for the reversible rectifie
r operating with a simple type of VSC. These demonstrate an excellent
dynamic performance. The design process and experimental for a results
conventional space vector modulated scheme are included for compariso
n.
